Business Model Competition (BMC)

The Business Model Competition (BMC) is based on the methodology of the Business Model Canvas and requires that companies tell their story beginning from the idea stage, including pivots along the way. The customer-centered focus of the Business Model Canvas enables startups to validate their business model and pivot where necessary to optimize results. Questions participants will answer include: What were the assumptions in your original business idea? How did you test them? How did you respond to those tests? What has been the result? $20,000 in cash prizes is up for grabs!

Iowa Startup Games

The Iowa Startup Games brings together UI undergraduate and graduate students to start a business in a weekend. On Friday night, students pitch their ideas for a business and form teams to work on the best business ideas. On Saturday, teams discover information that pertains to their business, get outside the classroom to conduct customer discovery, and refine their ideas. On Sunday, teams tailor their final pitches, present, and win money! $2,500 in cash prizes is awarded during the weekend!

Idea Storm Competition

You will have one minute to share your idea with the audience. After presenting, judges will provide immediate feedback that will help improve your idea. The pitches are followed by a Startup Social, where you will have the chance to learn from professionals' experiences and find out about opportunities in the area. $1,500 in cash prizes will be given away. This competition is made possible by the University of Iowa John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC), I-Envision, Sigma Nu Tau, and Enactus.

Rose Francis Elevator Pitch Competition

An elevator pitch is an overview of a business idea or commercial opportunity, and should be able to convince an investor to consider investing in your business idea in the amount of time it would take to reach your floor while riding in an elevator with him or her. The elevator pitch competition is open to ANY current University of Iowa undergraduate or graduate student, and $20,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. Newly formed ideas and early stage businesses will pitch on the first day of the competition, and validated businesses will pitch on the second day of the competition.
