Our April First Friday features artwork and correspondence of Iowa native George L. Stout. Stout was leader of the Monuments Men during World War II and was responsible for recovering over five million pieces of art from Hitler and the Nazis. Stout’s life continues to have international impact on the fields of art conservation and monuments protection. The Monuments Men organization continues today as the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield, an organization whose goal is to protect art and monuments in areas of global conflict from destruction. Innovative methods of art conservation, created by Stout some ninety years ago, are still used today in major museums around the world.
By George! immediately precedes the Iowa City premiere of Stout Hearted: George Stout and the Guardians of Art, an eighty-one minute documentary produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Kevin Kelley. Kelley has made films in Iowa for thirty years. He directed and produced Stout Hearted through New Mile Media Arts, a not-for-profit corporation which he founded three years ago with producer Marie Wilkes. This is New Mile Media Art’s first film.
